Approach and policies

We create lasting value for all South Africans

"Our aim is to leave positive socio-economic legacies for all communities with whom we engage, legacies that are determined in consultation with the communities themselves."

Chairman Social and Ethics Committee Dolly Mokgatle

Our approach

Sustainability is integral to the way we operate and is the cornerstone of our existence. It means being able to operate profitably and sustainably creating value for all our stakeholders while providing social, economic and environmental opportunities for future generations.

Our sustainability strategy supports our commitment to:

  • Create and leave a positive legacy in the communities in which we operate
  • Operate safely in a manner that seeks to eliminate harm to people and the environment
  • Deliver on our socio-economic development promises
  • Become a partner of choice to a broad range of stakeholders

Our material issues

Our material issues this year all speak to one another and are aligned to timelines that indicate how they affect our ability to create value in the short, medium and long term. In addition, these material issues are tied closely to our strategic objectives.

By closely examining the issues that could have the biggest impact on our business we believe we must focus on:

  • Responding to changes in the iron ore market
  • Shifting stakeholder expectations
  • Delivering a resilient business

World Business Council for Sustainable Development is a CEO-led organisation of forward-thinking companies that galvanises the global business community to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment.

The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) works to improve sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry.

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a United Kingdom-based organisation that works to disclose the greenhouse gas emissions of major companies.

South African Business Collation on HIV/AIDS (SABCOHA).
Healthy workplaces, shaping healthy communities.

Transparency

All partnerships are built on trust and we believe transparency has a huge role to play in establishing the sense of openness and fairness that is needed for relationships with our stakeholders to flourish.

By supporting the principle of transparency through the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and other new transparency requirement, we believe we can help stakeholders better understand our businesses and the value it creates for stakeholders.
