Whether you are a Grade 12 learner or currently studying towards a South African degree or Bachelor of Engineering Technology qualification, we provide bursaries to individuals in need of financial assistance and to those who require practical experience, so that they are able to meet the requirements of their mining-related subjects.

BTECH MINING ENGINEERING – UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG

Cheryl was offered a bursary by Kumba Iron Ore in 2011 and completed her studies in 2014. During her University tenure, she was actively involved in Women in Mining (WIM) initiatives leading to her being spotted by Kumba as a prospective bursar at a WIM function hosted by the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

As part of her graduate programme Cheryl has received exposure at different business units within Anglo American including Anglo Platinum (Amandelbult) where she was a Production Supervisor. She is currently placed at Kumba’s Kolomela Mine.

Cheryl is the first-place winner of the 2017 Kumba Professional in Training (PIT) Symposium with her project aimed at production optimization and cost efficiencies at Anglo Platinum. Her motto in life is: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

It is essential that, if you join Anglo American, you develop the skills you require to successfully deliver on the strategic objectives of our company.

When you choose a career at Anglo American, you must decide not only what career path to take, but also which area interests you. Below you can find four potential career paths, and the sub-disciplines they comprise of.

Engineering

Functional expert (Corporate, BU, Operations)

Provides corporate leadership, BU-management or operational engineering input. Manages and/or draws on specialist Engineering teams to maintain, upgrade and design mining and metallurgical plant solutions.

Electrical / Mechanical / Energy

Provides specialist Engineering input and expertise within the field of Electrical (includes C&l, industrial and software), Mechanical or Energy Engineering, to design and maintain effective systems.

Civil and water

Provides specialist input into the design, construction and maintenance of physical built environments and environmental systems, including infrastructure, structural engineering, water and waste management and mine residue management (i.e. tailings and waste rock).

Engineering asset management

Drives proactive maintenance support and Asset Management to improve systems, drive efficiency and generate value for Anglo American.

Projects capital engineering

Provides focused Engineering input to support Project and Capital management.

Geosciences

Management/Multi sub-discipline

To lead, manage and/or govern exploration and mineral resource management activities involving two or more components of Geosciences to support and enable Group Strategy.

Exploration geology

To find mineral deposits in new areas or near existing mines and to identify extensions to existing resources or mining operations.

Resource evaluation

To model and/or estimate mineral resources at a project level or operating mine and/or to oversee public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and ore reserves.

Mining geology

To ensure optimised ore extraction and product recovery during mining operations.

Geochemistry

To provide geochemical tools and techniques to assist in exploration and mine geology.

Geophysics

To provide geophysics tools and techniques to assist in exploration and mine geology.

Mining

Mine operations

Involves the organisation and operation of the mines to achieve the long-term planning objectives, with emphasis on achieving all planning, objectives, optimal resource extraction and effective operational processes.

Mine technical/Mine planning

Evaluates and analyses mining/geological/ventilation and geotechnical information to design, plan and schedule mining operations, with emphasis on mining method, access selection and long-term planning. This may also include the assessment of new mining technologies and their development/application.

Mine surveying

Provides expert mine survey input into mining and survey plans and geometric control of mining operations, including spatial measurement governance (works with mine geologist on grade plans and grade control, and with rock/ geotechnical engineering on ground movement monitoring). Emphasis on mining quantities and reporting on compliance with mine design and planned production and proximity of operations to hazards and areas of restricted activity.

Rock/Geotechnical engineering

Analyses, designs and monitors geotechnical plans and rock stability control systems for new and existing mining operations. Emphasis on risk mitigation and design optimisation. Works closely with all mining Sub-Discipline areas and Geosciences.

Ventilation engineering

Designs and monitors mine ventilation and cooling (or heating) systems while providing expert advice on occupational hygiene/health matters.

Mineral resource management

Analyses and evaluates mining/geological/geotechnical, survey and financial information to ensure optimal management of mineral resources and reserves.

Processing

Metallurgy

Designs, engineers and operates metallurgical process plants. Researches, optimises, and develops the most appropriate beneficiation technology for current and future plant operations. Provides technical input to beneficiate ores and produce the saleable products.

Chemistry

Provides analytical support across the life-cycle of a commodity to determine the chemical composition. Undertakes quality management chemical analysis of mining ore samples and process plant samples to ensure that planned business performance is achieved and upgraded where possible. Where appropriate, researches and develops new methods and instruments.

Mineralogy

Examines and analyses ore and process samples to identify the mineralogical phases present and determines their modes of occurrence. Ensures that the mineralogy of the phases of interest are best understood so that the most appropriate beneficiation can be developed. Applied mineralogy also plays an important role in geometallurgy, materials studies (such as establishing the causes of refractory failure in furnaces) and technique and process development.
