Responsible Mining in Action – IRMA 75 at Sishen and Kolomela Mine.

For Kumba, responsible mining means operating with integrity across our entire mine life cycle – respecting human rights, safeguarding worker safety, supporting host communities and protecting nature – while remaining transparent and accountable in what we do. In 2024, Sishen and Kolomela mines were independently assessed against the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) Standard for Responsible Mining, achieving IRMA 75 – a landmark first for iron ore operations across Africa.

In 2025, both Sishen and Kolomela successfully retained their IRMA 75 achievement levels through an on-site 3rd party surveillance audit. This outcome reflects our integrated approach to sustainability and reinforces our commitment to transparent, and responsible mining practices.

What IRMA means – and why IRMA 75 matters

IRMA is a comprehensive, multi‑stakeholder, responsible mining standard for industrial‑scale mining. independent, mine‑site audits assess performance across 26 topic areas, grouped under four principles: Business Integrity, Planning for Positive Legacies, Social Responsibility and Environmental Responsibility. IRMA recognises progressive performance at four achievement levels: IRMA transparency, IRMA 50, 75, and 100. Achieving IRMA 75 confirms that all critical requirements have been met and that at least 75% of criteria under each principle have been substantially achieved. Results are publicly reported and remain valid for three years, with a surveillance audits conducted to track continuous improvement.

Building trust across the value chain

Attaining IRMA 75 at our Sishen and Kolomela mines strengthens confidence among our employees, communities, customers and investors that our iron ore is produced responsibly and transparently. This achievement is further complemented by ValuTrax™, Anglo American’s blockchain‑enabled product traceability solution, which provides customers with added assurance on product provenance and our ESG performance

Improvements already underway

IRMA’s independent findings continue to accelerate learning and improvements across our operations. The process has catalysed enhancements key operational areas, including adaptive water management practices – such as improved water‑balance modelling, rain‑readiness planning, and enhanced water monitoring – building resilience for both our operations and for host communities.

Driving Inclusion and Diversity at Kumba

Inclusion is core to how we lead.

Our Women in Mining (WiM) steering committees together with our Everyone’s Dignity Matters campaign, reinforces a zero‑tolerance stance on bullying, harassment and gender‑based violence. This initiative is underpinned by the independent Living with Dignity Hub and a confidential reporting ecosystem, YourVoice.

We also invest in people with disabilities, through accredited learnerships and workplace enablement initiatives. These efforts are integrated with our strong safety culture and holistic wellness programmes spanning mental health, chronic disease management and HIV/TB care.

Building on this foundation, in 2025 we launched dedicated lactation facilities at Sishen and Kolomela mines, as well as Saldanha Bay Port – enabling women to bring their whole selves to work. Led by our WiM community, the programme complements our long‑standing commitment to inclusive workplace design. It provides a practical signal of respect for pregnancy and early motherhood – reducing barriers to safe work, easing return‑to‑work transitions and strengthening retention and wellbeing. This builds on our broader inclusion approach of including 40% women in leadership by 2030.
