Kumba and Transnet announce 13mtpa expansion

Kumba Iron Ore Limited ("Kumba") and Transnet Limited ("Transnet") are pleased to announce the expansion of the Sishen-Saldana Iron Ore Export Channel from 47Mtpa to 60Mtpa.

Of the additional 13Mtpa capacity to be created, 9Mtpa have been allocated to Kumba, which will be used for the development of Sishen South, a new mine located near Postmasburg.

The Iron Ore Export Channel expansion represents a capital investment in excess of R4 billion in real terms by Transnet. This will include the purchasing of additional rolling stock, upgrading of electricity infrastructure, the construction of loops and a 36km rail link by 2012 to service the new Sishen South mine.
