Northern Cape gears up for celebrities and cycling

14 August, 2013

Next month sees cyclists and spectators from across the Northern Cape descend on Kathu, for the Kumba Iron Ore Classic, one of the most popular cycling challenges across the country. This year, to add to the excitement of this highly-anticipated race, three major celebrities will be joining the race, offering the public the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride with them

The Kumba Iron Ore Classic cycle race will take place on Saturday 21 September, kicking off at the Kalahari Country Club in Kathu. The race, which is a seeding event for both the National Classic and Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, provides entrants with an opportunity to compete in either a 50km or a gruelling 105km race.

Local radio presenter, Boitumelo Korogo, singer Izak Davel and renowned model and international movie star, Vanessa Haywood, will all be taking part in the 50km race, testing their pedalling skills against some of the country's leading amateur and professional cyclists. Further to this, this celebrity team will have a number of wildcard spots which will be open to the public, allowing avid cyclists the opportunity to ride with their favourite personality.

"We are really excited to have the ambassadors on board and look forward to welcoming them to Kathu," comments Tanya Aucamp, Communications Manager at Kumba's Sishen Mine. "We are also delighted to give cycling fans the chance to ride with these celebrities, and join the Kumba Iron Ore team. Further details on the competition will be announced shortly."

More than simply a cycling challenge, the Kumba Iron Ore Classic aims to be a fun day out, bringing together families from across the Northern Cape. Alongside the two main races, an 8km fun ride will offer all family members the chance to take part in the day, with the funds raised donated to various charities nominated by the ambassadors. Other entertainment for the day will include spinning classes, clowns, mime artists, food stalls, a beer tent and entertainment by both local artists and, of course, musical star and ambassador, Izak Davel.

"I'm delighted to be part of the Classic, as I'm a hugely passionate cyclist," comments Haywood. "But outside of the challenge of the race itself, Kumba are putting on a fantastic show – I'd encourage everyone to come out for the day to enjoy one of the premier races in cycling and a wonderful family experience."
